Spousal Sponsorship

Spousal sponsorship is a type of family reunification where you can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada. Sponsors must be able to support them financially and provide them with all essential needs.

If you do spousal sponsorship, it’s important to know the following:

  • You must be able to support them financially.
  • They can’t need social assistance from the government.
  • Each sponsored person will undergo a medical exam (to make sure they don’t have any diseases that could spread in Canada).

Eligibility for spousal sponsorship

The main criterion for spousal sponsorship is to show the genuine character of your relationship.

For married couples, you will need to provide a marriage certificate.

For common-law partnership, you will need to provide evidence of the spousal relationship, such as:

  • providing joint financial records
  • showing proof that you live together for at least one year (this could be in any form)
  • having a shared lease or mortgage agreement with their name on it.
  • having photos and videos from various events
  • air tickets from vacations, etc.

The processing time varies from case to case but usually takes about twelve months before they receive permanent resident status.

Sponsoring children

The program includes children who meet the following conditions: they’re under 22;  they’re either your children or ‘adopted’ by you. Sponsored children cannot have a spouse or child of their own.

If you would like to sponsor your children, then there are two things that need to be true:

  • You prove that the parents won’t provide financial support for the children and spousal sponsorship is not available. (This could happen if one or both partners are deceased)
  • The biological mother does not want her child back in her home country because she cannot care for him/her due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, etcetera).

The processing time varies from case to case but usually takes about twelve months before they receive permanent resident status.
